The Full Reveal – Roman Shades for an Eclectic Family Home

by Kim

Project Background

Today we’re excited to share before and after photos of a really fun project we did with super talented designer, Velinda Hellen. We got to know Velinda when she worked as part of the Emily Henderson design team. So, when she reached out to us asking if we wanted to partner on one of her first client projects as a solo designer, we said “ABSOLUTELY!”

To give you some background on the project, the homeowners hired Velinda to do a complete overhaul of their main living spaces (kitchen, living room and dining room). Along with new furnishings, fixtures and paint, they also wanted to finally cover their very bare windows. Here’s a before photo of the kitchen.

The Design Consultation

According to Velinda, one of the biggest design challenges was to find a way to blend the homeowners’ very eclectic design tastes, which ranged from boho to old English pub. Whew! When it came time to select the window treatments, Velinda knew working with experts like us would make the process much easier.

Custom Roman Shades Kitchen

Local Decorview designer, Laurel, visited the home and helped the homeowners find the perfect solution to complement their new furnishings – Roman shades but with a modern twist. What makes these shades so special are the crisp folds, minimal stack and super slim valance.

For the fabric choice, Laurel recommended a beautiful textured material in a soft greige color that ties in all the other warm tones in the home.

How to Block an Ugly View

In addition to being beautiful, the window treatments also needed to be functional. The homeowners had two main requirements: privacy at night and the ability to block an ugly view out the living room window. For the kitchen, dining and back door, the homeowners chose a cordless lift system that allows them to easily open and close the shades by push up or pulling down on the bottom rail. For the living room, Laurel suggested a really innovative feature – top-down/bottom-up. This awesome system allows you to position your shades anywhere in the window, which allowed homeowners to block just the ugly part of their view while still allowing incoming light at the top of the window.
